The amount of whitespace in the new layout seems excessive. This is especially apparent anytime a header is involved. The space above and below the question title, for instance, is more than 1x the height of the text. It also reduces the information density on important pages, like question listing, quite dramatically. Compare:
with a tweaked version with ...
I'm in full support of including the photo widget here on meta, as long as screenshot-of-the-week continues to be consistent for the foreseeable future.
If screenshot of the week becomes inconsistent, intermittent, or people stop participating, I'd propose that the widget eventually be removed.
UPDATE - The ship only fires once per page load after a five second delay.
Adding hover or click to this does make it more complicated as it makes the base code for this site different than others but it's not out of the realms of possibility to add this. For the time being, thoughts on making the delay for the gif much slower or ...
I agree; we should definitely be using code blocks for Minecraft commands. Why?
Commands are basically a type of code. Code should go in code blocks. Blockquotes are for quotes, not code.
Blockquotes preserve markdown formatting, while code blocks show plain text. This is especially important for crash logs, as some of the symbols used conflict with ...
To demonstrate this, I inspected the source to get the hex codes for the colors. The visited link is #114475, and the plain text is #3b4045. If you run a contrast on these two colors you get a contrast difference of 1.05:1, which would fail WCAG 2.0 AA and AAA requirements if they were foreground and background colors for both normal and large text. WCAG 2.0 ...
Can we get a face for our beloved mothership?
Without the 'Ask Question' text, the face of the mothership looks really plain:
Can mothership v2 have a few more turrets/lazors/features in the blank space?
Anything cool like this that could drive participation on Arqade should be utilized.
It's small enough that people who don't care won't be bothered, but big enough that it's noticeable and will draw attention.
Flag box seems to inherit transparency from parent post, and has bad z-order when that post is greyed out:
This doesn't seem to effect regular posts, just those that have hit the downvote/negative score threshold.
A couple of things I noticed:
1. What happened to our 'Planet surface'/Arcade Footer?
Now it just looks like we're floating in space...
The left nav is collapsed by design on some pages, the Help Center is one of them. You can access it in the upper left corner hamburger menu.
2. The help center home page has ...
The community is strongly in favour of lasers. The site's demographic likes them a lot.
If you don't want lasers, I suggest removing them with a userstyle.
(For Stylish, unfun, users)
This is based on Fredley's Userscript answer, but as a Userstlye
Flag count is in the wrong place, and the user info on the right hand side is too spaced out.
Users page, visited link in count should be white:
It's even worse on meta:
Same page, counts not centered:
History page, too much space at the top, and the count on the left hand side is not centered with the text:
These two colours are too similar:
If you're really super concerned about semantic markup, you can use <pre></pre> tags, which carry no implication that the preformatted text is code. Personally, I don't care that much.
As for the actual fixed formatting, whether created through <pre>, <code>, backticks, or 4-space indentation, that has never been restricted to code. ...
Yes, it should be added.
Why Arqade users could benefit.
It would give users interesting content to see on a regular basis,
even if they never click to see the rest of the week's submissions. The effect would be similar to the Hot Network Questions.
For askers, it would offer a channel of participation while their
current questions wait to receive an ...
For now, this isn't a near-term goal. Jin is still our only designer and he's kinda... being torn apart by us dragging him to deal with everything, every other thing, and everything on top of that. It apparently isn't a trivial process for him to setup weaponry here on Meta, so it'll have to wait until the necessary time investment slot exists as usable time ...
The review buttons feel too big. And now that I'm typing this, so does the font in the answer edit box. In fact, as pointed out by @PrivatePansy, everything feels too big and airy. What's the opposite of claustrophobia? Because I'm feeling it now.
Here is a userscript to disable the effect
...if it really does bother you so much. In order to install it you'll need to drag it into your extensions page (Chrome) or use Greasemonkey (Firefox). All it does is replace the css for the hover effect, and remind you that you're an awful person.
I took the liberty of creating a new vector graphic with the 'meta' included.
I'm not a vector graphics pro, but using Inkscape and copying and manipulating the existing objects I was able to create something reasonable:
And a screenshot of how that will look (the vague horizontal line in the 't' has been fixed):
The SVG can be found here.
Can we have the old footer imagery back? In particular the old old gaming dot stackexchange dot com heart.
The new logotype doesn't feel right to me, it's very jagged, and the D isn't aligned with the other letters. Would it be possible to see what it would look like with less slant, or no slants on the ...
Maybe we should just ditch the mothership entirely
(Dodges eggs from mothership fanatics!)
Others have said that the mothership feels out of place by just randomly shooting its laser beam, rather than doing it on hover like it used to. Ultimately though, the mothership just seems to me like an old artifact that doesn't really fit on the current site, and I ...
