Thank you everyone for participating. Mario Marathon is over $84,500 total raised for Child's Play, and we helped! Together we donated $460 and helped a good cause. No one cashed in on the ability to donate to other charities, so that is our total for this go-around.
Vote for this option if you want to run it online. The idea would be we would have set people swap in and out of the stream and certain times. People would marathon through a game, or for a certain amount of time, and then hand it off to the next person to marathon. This makes it easier for us to do as an online community and allows more people to ...
Top Tag Marathon
This was suggested in the other thread, but I'll add it in here as well.
The idea is to go through our top tags, and run a marathon, streaming our progress online. With this there are two options for how we might want to do this. The first is to do a distributed stream, where a few people from around the world take a game or two to marathon ...
I don't have the idea fully fleshed out, but it would be cool if we could setup a "celebrity expert" Q&A event. People would submit questions along with a donation amount. We would line up celebrity experts to answer the questions in order of the amount donated. Donating doesn't guarantee that your question gets a celebrity answer (due to time ...
We could do a weekend live stream consisting of the top tags on the site.
So for instance, a group of us could start a fresh Minecraft world and after a certain goal, kill the ender dragon. For ME3, goals could be for certain missions. A similar option could exist for Skyrim and D3. I'm not a LoL or SC2 player, so I don't know what to suggest for that.
What our goals will be in each game
Similar to how Mario Marathon does it, we can set a set of goals for each of the games, and the more people donate, the more goals we complete. We can either combine this with the per game voting, or just go top to bottom as Mario Marathon does.
With +10, I will assume we have interest from the community to do something. I'll mark this as accepted and create a question about what we should. Here are the rough next steps for planning:
What type of event are we going to run? Top Tag Marathon
How are we going to run it, and what are the details?
Will it be online or in person? Online
What will ...
Assuming our goal is something feasible like defeat the ender dragon, or even wither. I (@fredley) don't think perma-death is a great idea, as it would make things pretty tedious if we get nowhere at all.
Donation goals suggestions:
No armour allowed
Only iron weapons/tools allowed
Start on a remote island with no/few trees (I think we should do ...
Vote for this option to run it as an in person marathon. The idea would be to pick a centralized location for as many users as possible and run a marathon at someone's place. The stream would run for a weekend from one location, and as many users as could show up would participate. With an in person marathon, we can also do a bit more things since ...
We had a big turnout this year! Thank you to everyone who donated, watched, shared, and helped for this drive. We did a great job to raise money for some amazing causes.
This year, we raised a total of $940.04!! In that, we donated to Child's Play Charity, Direct Relief, and the Polizzi Clinic. Causes like these rely on support from people ...
Thanks for everyone who donated. Unfortunately tracking did not work as well as I'd hoped, but I matched all those donations I knew about. If you did donate to either Zeldathon or a different cause, make sure to email me so that I know I got yours matched.
Marathon run: 42195m (blocks) in a specified direction (time: about 2 hours on boat if it's mostly water)
... not using boats, but getting pig-riding equipment, beds and possibly two or three Ender Pearls at the start; swimming is fine (time: about 3 hours)
... without the equipment (time: heavily dependent on the terrain, but not under 3 hours)
Voting has Finished
We have our list of games. They are:
Minecraft (12 votes)
Portal 2 (10 votes)
Terraria (8 votes)
Borderlands 2 (6 votes)
For 5th place, we have a 4-way tie. I'll be resolving this with my votes (since I couldn't vote). I'm picking one game, with one more as an optional extra stream event.
Starcraft 2 (4 votes) Removed. No one was ...
Similar to Skyrim, and another high profile tag on the site. Runs from scratch to finish could be done and include a group of players to go through with as many of them streaming as desired. Pledge levels could unlock accomplishment of challenges within the game or made up by the community as well as a certain level of progression through the game.
Marathon run through the game based upon pledge level to include side quests or X amount of random quests. Could also include DLC storylines and accomplishments in the tiered progression... Biggest problem I forsee with this one is resisting the Oh Shiny! mentality so driven into the game.
For Science Answers
We can give them a mechanism (not on the site) to ask questions which we will test in the game. When a question gets enough donations, we hope onto that game and science an answer for them. If the question they want answered is already on the site, they can link to it.
Which game we play
People will donate for their favorite game, and we will marathon through the games in top to bottom order. For open ended games, we can choose to either set a goal or to marathon until something gets more money than that game.
The premise is pretty simple, we run a tournament online and people can sign up. We take donations as entry fee, and we offer up prizes for first, second and third place or something. The basic idea is pretty simple, people sign up, we put them in to brackets, and we play until there is a winner. We'll need to set up rules for the ...
